Many of you are already well aware of the evil which lurks online. Those who are ignorant to the dangers unrestricted online access pose may be left with a false sense of security.
One of the most popular online gaming platforms for young childen is Roblox.
63%, more than half, of Roblox users are under the age of 16, 25% are under the age of 9, and 55% of children aged 9-12 in the USA play Roblox each week.
Last week, a 27 year-old man from Bear, Delaware groomed an 11 year-old girl through Roblox, convincing her to give him her name & address.

Americans today are surrounded by images and talk of sexually explicit material. This constant sexual exposure leads to a desensitizing of moraly reprehensible behavior. This desensitizing, along with mental derangement can lead to evil people acting on their sadistic impulses.
“At approximately 6:45 a.m. on September 10, 2023, members of the Wayne Police Department responded to the area of U.S. Route 46 and Old Turnpike Road in Wayne, New Jersey on a report of a missing 11-year-old child,” cops wrote. “The Wayne Police Department located the victim soon after she was reported missing in Bear, Delaware. Based on the investigation, police determine that Darius Matylewich had met the victim while playing an online video game [Roblox] and transported her from Wayne, New Jersey, to Bear, Delaware, without the knowledge or consent of her parents.”
Roblox is a platform that can be enjoyable for children, but there are potential risks and concerns that parents should be aware of. Some of the dangers of Roblox include:
Inappropriate Content: Roblox is a user-generated platform, which means that content is created by users, including children. While Roblox has moderation systems in place, there is a risk of encountering inappropriate or offensive content, including chat messages, games, and avatars.
Online Interactions: Roblox allows players to interact with others through chat and gameplay. This can expose children to online interactions with strangers, and there's a risk of encountering cyberbullying, inappropriate conversations, or even potential predators.
Privacy Concerns: Children may not always be aware of the risks of sharing personal information online. Roblox, like many online platforms, can pose privacy concerns if children share information like their real name, location, or other personal details.
In-Game Purchases: Roblox uses a virtual currency called Robux, which can be bought with real money. Children might be tempted to make in-game purchases without understanding the financial implications. Parents should monitor and control spending on the platform.
Addictive Gameplay: Like many online games, Roblox can be addictive. Children may spend excessive time playing, affecting their daily routines and responsibilities.
To mitigate these risks, parents can take the following steps:
Use Parental Controls: Roblox provides parental controls that allow parents to restrict who can communicate with their child and who can join their child's games.
Supervise Gameplay: Sit down with your child, explore Roblox together, and discuss the potential dangers. Make sure they understand the importance of not sharing personal information and reporting inappropriate behavior.
Set Time Limits: Establish rules for how much time your child can spend playing Roblox, and ensure they balance gaming with other activities.
Educate on In-App Purchases: Discuss in-app purchases and set up controls to prevent unauthorized purchases.
Stay Informed: Keep yourself informed about the games and experiences your child is engaging in on Roblox.
Roblox can be a fun and creative platform for children, but it's important for parents to be proactive in managing the potential risks associated with online gaming and social interactions.
It is not to say that Roblox does not have it's benefits. It is a great opportunity to practice & teach internet safety. It's inevitable that children in today's society will be immersed in an ever growing online world. It is our responsibility as parents to make sure that our children understand the reality of the internet, and make the best decisions when we are not there to guide them.

I highly recommend creating a Roblox account of your own. It will not only gives you a better understanding of the immersive world of Roblox, but invaluable quality time spent with your child. (Even in making the thumbnail for this post!) A truly rewarding experience in its own rights.
Most online games & applications have parental controls. I recommend to always browse the settings and turn on any necessary parental controls, such as restricting chat.
Keep your child's “friends" list limited to only people they personally know.
Make sure that they understand that no matter what an avatar may look like, it is in no way assumed a representation of the person controlling it. This is reaffirmed by a constant reminder as you would remind a child to look both ways before crossing a road.
Last, the predators that lurk online know what they are looking for. They can tell if a character is controlled by an unsupervised child, and exploit that vulnerability.
